AESTHETIC & NON-SURGICAL TREATMENTS
BOTOX AND FILLERS
BOTOX
Botox, short for botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In the field of cosmetic medicine, Botox treatments refer to the use of this toxin for non-surgical facial rejuvenation and wrinkle reduction. When used in cosmetic procedures, Botox is injected into specific muscles in the face. It works by temporarily blocking the signals between nerves and muscles, preventing the muscles from contracting. This relaxation of the muscles can smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, resulting in a more youthful appearance.
Botox treatments are commonly used to address dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles caused by repetitive facial muscle movements. Examples of such wrinkles include frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines, and crow's feet around the eyes. By relaxing the underlying muscles, Botox can reduce the appearance of these wrinkles and prevent them from becoming more pronounced.
PROCEDURE
The procedure itself is relatively quick and can often be done during a visit to a healthcare professional's office. The injection sites are typically cleansed, and a small amount of Botox is injected using a fine needle. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief, and no anesthesia is required. However, topical numbing agents or ice packs may be applied to the treatment
area to enhance comfort.
RESULTS
Results from Botox treatments are not immediate and typically take a few days to appear. The full effects can be seen within one to two weeks after the procedure. The results are temporary and typically last for three to four months, after which the muscle activity gradually returns, and the wrinkles may reappear. Maintenance treatments are usually needed to sustain the desired results.
Dr Sooka performs Botox treatments in a way that deliver natural, beautiful results to enhance one's natural appearance.
It's important to note that Botox treatments should only be performed by qualified healthcare professionals, such as plastic surgeons, who have experience in administering the injections. This helps ensure safety and optimal results. While Botox is generally considered safe, there are potential risks and side effects associated with the treatment. These can include temporary bruising, swelling, headache, or flu-like symptoms. Rarely, more severe complications may occur.
It's also worth mentioning that Botox has various medical applications beyond cosmetic use, such as treating certain medical conditions like muscle spasms, chronic migraines, and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).
DERMAL FILLERS
Dermal fillers, also known as soft tissue fillers, are injectable substances used to restore volume, smooth out wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. They are a popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment option. Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most common type and are naturally found in the body, providing hydration and plumpness to the skin.
The procedure involves injecting the dermal filler directly into specific areas of the face, targeting areas with volume loss, lines, or hollows. The filler works by adding volume, filling in wrinkles or folds, and restoring a more youthful appearance. The results are immediate, and the effects can last from several months to over a year, depending on the type of filler used and individual factors.
Dermal fillers can be used to address various concerns, such as:
1. Wrinkles and lines: They can smooth out fine lines around the mouth (marionette lines), nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the mouth), and vertical lip lines.
2. Volume loss: Dermal fillers can restore volume in areas that have lost fullness, such as the cheeks, temples, and under-eye hollows.
3. Lip enhancement: They can add volume and shape to the lips, creating a fuller and more defined appearance.
4. Facial contouring: Dermal fillers can be used to enhance facial features, such as augmenting the chin, jawline, or cheekbones.
PROCEDURE
The procedure is typically performed in Dr Sooka’s rooms in Mediclinic Sandton, and topical or local anesthesia may be used to minimize discomfort.
The injection sites are cleansed, and the filler is carefully injected into the targeted areas. The procedure is relatively quick, and most individuals can resume their normal activities immediately afterward.
While dermal fillers are generally considered safe, there are potential risks and side effects associated with the treatment. These can include temporary swelling, bruising, redness, or lumps at the injection sites. Rarely, more severe complications may occur. It's essential to have a thorough consultation with a healthcare professional to discuss the potential risks, benefits, and expected outcomes of dermal filler treatments.
RECOVERY
Botox and fillers are relatively painless procedures with quick results and no downtime. The injections used to administer Botox and fillers are tiny. These injections are so small that the risk of bruising is minimal. Lips usually become swollen and red after fillers, which subside in time.
