FACIAL REJUVENATION SURGERY
OTOPLASTY
Our ears are important features that contribute to facial harmony and overall facial aesthetics. In some instances, due to ear prominence, people may choose to undergo otoplasty to reshape and improve on the appearance of their ears. Prominent ears may affect people's self-confidence and, in childhood, may be a source of teasing by other children. Ear injuries resulting from trauma may also affect the appearance of the ear. The desire to reshape the ear and unhappiness due to the size and shape of the ears are some of the reasons people may consider otoplasty.
Children between 5-7 years of age and adults are eligible for otoplasty.
PROCEDURE
While the patient is under anaesthesia, Dr Sooka creates an incision at the back of the crease of the ear. The cartilage of the ear is then reshaped and remoulded with stitches from the inside of the ear, thereby recontouring the ear and addressing the prominence. Other surgical techniques may be implemented to address other aesthetic concerns which patients may have.
RECOVERY
Dr Sooka carefully dresses and bandages the ears to provide support and protect them from injury. Slight discomfort or irritation is typical after surgery, but this should subside in time. Taking pain medication as prescribed will lessen the discomfort while recovering.
After otoplasty, remember the following:
- Sleep flat on the back to reduce pressure on the ears
- Avoid rubbing or touching the incisions.
- Avoid sleeping on one side.
- Wear loose-fitting collars or button-down shirts that do not brush against the ears when getting dressed
A few days after otoplasty surgery, at the follow-up appointment, Dr Sooka removes the bandages and dressings. He recommends wearing a loose headband at night for 2-6 weeks to reduce swelling and to protect the ears. Wearing a headband at night prevents one from tugging the ears.
