BODY CONTOURING

ABDOMINOPLASTY (Tummy-tuck)

An abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a procedure to remove excess fat and skin to reshape and recontour the abdomen. This procedure also tightens weak or separated abdominal muscles, which help create a smooth, firm stomach. A tummy tuck is ideal for patients who want to get rid of extra abdominal skin and restore a slim contour to their abdomen.

Abdominoplasty is not a surgical treatment for being overweight.

An abdominoplasty is not advised for women who are planning on falling pregnant and should be postponed until after having children.

Dr Sooka performs the tummy tuck surgery in Sandton, at the Mediclinic Sandton hospital. He uses the latest and best tummy tuck techniques to achieve natural, beautiful results.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

There are several different procedures for a tummy tuck, depending on one’s goals and the desired result. This will be determined at your consultation, during which a full physical examination will be performed to assess which procedure is best suited to achieving optimal results for each individual patient.

PROCEDURE

Under general anaesthesia, a curved, horizontal incision is made in the pelvic region, extending towards the waist. The shape and length of the incision depends on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed and will vary with each individual. The weakened, underlying muscles are repaired. A second horizontal incision is made close to the navel to remove the excess skin and fat from the upper abdominal region. The remaining skin is then pulled down to recreate a slimmer, tighter abdomen. A new opening for the belly button is created and sutured in place.

During the procedure you might be given an antibiotic to prevent infection.

The procedure typically takes about two to three hours.

RECOVERY

Bandages and a compression garment in the form of an abdominal binder are applied to the abdomen for support while recovering. Surgical drains under the abdominal skin remove excess fluid or blood after the procedure.

Postoperative care instructions include:

  • How to take care of drains and surgical incisions
  • Prescription medication to manage pain
  • What to look out for in terms of infection
  • When to schedule a follow-up appointment(s)with the doctor

Normal physical activity will be restricted in the weeks following a tummy-tuck, but this will gradually return to normal as the healing process continues. Strenuous physical activity is to be avoided for approximately four weeks post-operatively. At the end of six weeks, one can expect to return to their normal exercise routine.

RESULTS

The results of the tummy tuck are immediate. A smooth, flat stomach in proportion to one’s weight and body type is something to expect after surgery. Following surgery, patients feel more confident and boast a slim, fit stomach. The intended result is a smaller, attractive belly button on a flat contoured tummy. It is crucial to follow a healthy diet and avoid weight fluctuations following surgery so as to maintain the aesthetic result of the abdominoplasty.
