MASTOPEXY

A mastopexy, or more commonly known as a breast lift, is a procedure that aims to achieve full, healthy-looking breasts. Women often seek a mastopexy to fill empty breasts or to lift drooping or sagging breasts. The purpose of a mastopexy is to elevate the focal point of the breast, the nipple, which tends to sag as women get older, especially after having children. If possible, it is best to undertake a mastopexy after a woman has completed her family rather than between children.

Women may also consider a mastopexy when they feel the upper part of the breast is almost empty and not as full as the lower region. Breast reduction or augmentation is often combined with mastopexy to lift, reshape, and resize the breast, thereby restoring it to its youthful shape.

PROCEDURE

Surgery depends on the breasts’ structure. A breast lift usually involves tightening the skin and lifting the nipples. In some instances, a silicone breast implant may be necessary to further enhance the volume of the breast together with the mastopexy.

A thorough pre-operative evaluation of the patient and her breast tissue is performed before selecting the appropriate technique. A mastopexy is tailored to each individual depending on their anatomy and goals. Dr Sooka then discusses the individualised plan with the patient in-depth so that realistic goals can be achieved.

At the end of the surgery, the breasts will be dressed and a supportive bra applied. Post-operative drains may be used to remove excess blood and fluid from the breasts.

RECOVERY

Following a mastopexy, the breasts will be swollen and bruised for a few weeks. Pain and tenderness are present, which is managed with pain medication prescribed by the surgeon. A supportive bra must be worn for a period of approximately six weeks to aid in the recovery. During the recovery period, physical activity will be restricted to aid with the healing process.
